Month-end close with agents: what to automate and what to review

Publicado el 2026-10-12

Month-end close is a set of recurring jobs with a few points of judgment: accruals, journal entries with support, cash and balance sheet recs, flux commentary, the close package and audit evidence. Most of them already end in a draft that someone senior reviews. That is where an AI agent fits: it prepares the draft, and a named person decides what gets posted.

This guide is for controllers and staff accountants. It walks the close from T+1 (the first business day after month end) to T+5, names the skills that help at each step, and says where they do not. Anthropic published a Month-End Closer agent template on May 5, 2026 that "runs the close checklist, prepares journal entries, and produces close reports", and says users stay in the loop, "reviewing, iterating on, and approving Claude's work". That is the rule here: agents draft, people post.

These tools assist. A qualified accountant reviews every output before it reaches the ledger or a report, and nothing here is accounting, audit or tax advice.

Before you start: account, data, thresholds and reviewers

  1. An approved account. Claude Code needs a Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan, or an Anthropic Console (API) account; the free plan does not include it. Cowork, Anthropic's desktop agent app, needs a paid plan (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise). For ledger data, use the plan your firm has approved (see the data point under Limits and risks).
  2. Data the agent can read. Exports are enough: trial balance, subledger agings, bank statements and last month's workbook. Claude Code reads CSV files directly; to open an .xlsx file it usually runs a short Python script, so either have Python installed or export the data tables to CSV. Keep the original .xlsx for the workbook audit, because a CSV export keeps the values and drops the formulas. An ERP connector saves the export step but is optional.
  3. Materiality thresholds in writing. Agents flag what you tell them to flag, so write down your dollar and percentage thresholds for flux and reconciling items before the first run.
  4. A named reviewer for each step. Whoever reviews the agent's reconciliation should not be the person who ran it, the same segregation of duties you apply to people.

Where to install. The claude plugin commands below are for Claude Code. In Cowork, the Finance plugin installs from claude.com/plugins, and plugins from Anthropic's financial-services repository, such as Month-End Closer, install from Settings → Plugins → Add plugin, as each repository's README describes. The single-skill npx skills add commands need Node.js and target Claude Code; each of those skills also lists a Codex command on its resource page, and Codex users need their own OpenAI account.

Anthropic's Finance plugin adds slash commands such as /journal-entry, /reconciliation, /income-statement and /variance-analysis. Its README says it is designed mainly for Cowork but also works in Claude Code, and that without ERP or data-warehouse connectors "you can paste data or upload files for analysis."

Install the plugin or the single skills, not both. The plugin already contains six of the skills in this guide: Close Management, Journal Entry Preparation, reconciliation, variance-analysis, financial-statements and SOX Compliance Testing, plus audit-support. If you install it, skip the single-skill commands for those; they are for Codex users or for adding one skill at a time. The accrual-schedule and audit-xls skills come from a different repository and need their own install, unless you use Month-End Closer, which includes both.

NetSuite Finance AnalystPluginFor NetSuite users: close readiness and JE review on live dataoracle/netsuite-suitecloud-sdk356

If you run NetSuite, Oracle's plugin reads live data through the NetSuite AI Connector Service, which must be enabled first. For the close, it checks open-period status, unposted transactions and pending approvals, and flags manual journal entries above a threshold or with missing support.

This plugin can also write to NetSuite. Its skill instructions default to read-only analysis, but it will create or update records once you explicitly confirm the target record, period, subsidiary and accounting impact, and it treats journal entries, reclasses and accruals as high-risk writes that need that confirmation. To keep it draft-only, ask your NetSuite admin to connect it under a role that cannot post or approve journal entries.

T+1 to T+5: map the close

Start with the calendar, not the entries. Close Management lays out a five-day checklist, a dependency map (the bank rec waits for cash entries and the statement; the tax provision waits for pre-tax income), the critical path, a status board with owner and blocker columns, and a three-day accelerated version with its prerequisites.

dependencies and critical path, and list the three tasks that slipped most often with a
suggested fix for each. Do not change owners; flag any task without one.

Accruals and journal entries

The accrual-schedule skill takes an entity, a period and your accrual policy list, and produces one row per accrual: the basis with its source, the period portion, the amount already booked, the this-period accrual and a support reference. For each non-zero row it drafts the debit and credit with a memo, and notes the reversal date when your policy marks the accrual as auto-reversing. Its instructions say do not post. The catalog lists it as part of Anthropic's fund-admin plugin.

Two things to set up first. It expects to read what is already booked from a GL connector; without one, attach the GL detail. And it treats invoices and vendor statements as untrusted: it is built to apply your policy to amounts that a separate reader step has already pulled from those documents. Used on its own, give it a table of basis amounts with document references rather than the documents themselves.

Journal Entry Preparation covers the other recurring entries: prepaid amortization, depreciation, payroll and revenue recognition. It lists the support every entry should carry, a reviewer checklist and twelve common errors such as missing reversals and cut-off mistakes. It is written for US GAAP: revenue follows the ASC 606 five-step framework, and payroll mentions FICA, FUTA and 401(k) match.

Draft the JEs in a separate block and note the reversal where the policy says

Do not post.

Reconciliations

The reconciliation skill covers GL-to-subledger, bank and intercompany recs. It sorts reconciling items into timing differences, adjustments that need an entry, and items that need investigation; ages them in 30-day buckets; and suggests escalation thresholds that its README calls illustrative, so replace them with yours. It expects every rec to show preparer, reviewer and date.

Practitioners have a fair objection here. In a June 2026 r/Accounting thread, a senior accountant who had automated a bank reconciliation in Excel, cutting it from about 1.5 days to around an hour, was asked to rebuild it in Claude. One reply: "Claude will not repeat a process exactly the same way everytime. VBA macros, however, will." For high-volume, rule-based matching, that is right: keep a working deterministic process, let the agent document or extend it, and use the agent to explain what is left over.

Use the standard bank rec format, carry forward and age prior open items, and categorize
each item as timing, adjustment needed or investigate. Escalate anything over $10,000 or
older than 60 days. Leave the reviewer sign-off blank.

Draft statements and flux commentary

The variance-analysis skill breaks budget-versus-actual and period-over-period variances into price, volume and mix, headcount, or spend-category drivers. It writes commentary in a fixed structure (driver, outlook, action) and builds a text waterfall that has to reconcile. Its threshold framework uses 10% against budget and 15% against the prior period, with dollar thresholds left to you. It warns against weak explanations such as "timing" without saying what moved.

using driver, outlook and action. Where the data does not explain a variance, write
"needs owner input" and name the department. Do not guess a business reason.

For the draft statements themselves, the financial-statements skill produces monthly, quarterly or annual income statements with prior-period, year-over-year and budget comparisons, flags material variances, and includes balance sheet and cash flow formats. The Finance plugin's /income-statement command covers the same step.

Audit the workbook before it goes up the chain

The close package usually lives in a workbook that five people have edited. The audit-xls skill checks for #REF! and other errors, numbers hardcoded inside formulas, formulas that break their neighbors' pattern, sum ranges that miss a row, values pasted over formulas, broken cross-sheet links and hidden rows or tabs. It reports findings by severity and changes nothing until you ask.

Pick the file and the scope with care. Give it the .xlsx itself: a CSV export drops the formulas it checks. Its whole-workbook ("model") scope is built for integrated financial models such as DCF, LBO and three-statement models, and only some of those checks fit a close package, so use sheet scope, as in the prompt below. Its selection scope assumes a range selected in Excel; in Claude Code, name the file and the tabs.

In Claude Code the agent has to open the workbook file to see formulas as well as values. If it cannot, add the XLSX skill: it reads a workbook's formulas and values with the Python libraries openpyxl and pandas, so it needs Python on your machine. The catalog notes that it is source-available, not open source.

The end-to-end option: Month-End Closer

Month-End Closer is Anthropic's agent version of the steps above. Given an entity and a period, it pulls the trial balance, builds accruals and roll-forwards tied to the GL, drafts flux commentary against prior period and budget, and assembles a close package for controller sign-off. It ships its own copies of accrual-schedule and audit-xls, plus roll-forward, variance-commentary and xlsx-author skills, so you do not need the separate installs for those two.

Its instructions state two guardrails: workers that open invoices and vendor statements get no connector or write access, and "posting requires controller approval outside the agent." Only the Managed Agents version of the template, which developers deploy through Anthropic's API, builds the first one into its setup: a separate reader opens the documents with read and search tools and no connector, and a single poster, the only worker that can write files, saves the close package as an .xlsx and has no connector either. The Claude Code and Cowork plugin is one agent that reads files and holds every tool the GL connector offers, so there both guardrails are instructions, not tool restrictions.

The catch is data. The agent's tool list allows one connector, named internal-gl, and the plugin does not include it, so you or your IT team must supply a GL connector under that name. Make that connector read-only, with no tool that can post or approve entries. The plugin agent can read files and query the connector, but it cannot run code or write files: give it policies as CSV or plain text rather than Excel, and expect the package back as text in your session, which you can then ask Claude to save. It is an early release (version 0.1.0 as of October 2026), runs in Claude Code or Cowork, and is meant for the period-end close, not daily recs.

SOX evidence

For US public companies, SOX section 404 requires management to assess internal control over financial reporting every year, and auditor attestation is required too, except for emerging growth companies and non-accelerated filers. Companies expect auditors to look at their AI use: in KPMG's 2024 survey of 1,800 companies, 64% expected auditors to have a role in evaluating their use of AI in financial reporting.

When an agent prepared a rec or a JE, keep the inputs, the prompt, the output and the reviewer's sign-off together, so the review control has evidence behind it.

Testing the controls is a separate job, usually done by internal audit or another tester who is independent of the control: the controller who approves manual entries should not test that approval. If your company does its own management testing, pass SOX Compliance Testing and the prompt below to whoever does that work. The skill builds a control matrix for an area such as financial close or journal entries, sets sample sizes by control frequency, selects random, systematic or targeted samples from your population, and produces workpapers with "Tested by" and "Reviewed by" lines.

Limits and risks

  • Agents draft; they never post. Do not give an agent credentials that can post to the GL or approve entries: connect GL connectors and NetSuite under read-only roles. The repository behind Month-End Closer says its agents do not "post to a ledger" and that every output is staged for human sign-off.
  • Same input, different output. A model can word or order its work differently on each run. For mechanical matching, have the agent write a formula, macro or script you can test and rerun.
  • Judgment does not transfer. In an August 2026 thread titled People who say ai will takeover accounting do not know accounting, one reply named the real risk: "It's the knowing what's wrong that'll be interesting. So many staff over rely on AI and aren't learning." If juniors review agent output, have them reperform a sample by hand.
  • Data leaving the ERP. Trial balances and agings are non-public financials; use only a plan your firm has approved, typically Team, Enterprise or the API. Anthropic says it does not train on inputs or outputs from its commercial products by default unless you send feedback or otherwise opt in; on consumer plans (Free, Pro and Max, including when those accounts use Claude Code) it depends on the Model Improvement setting. Do not connect untrusted third-party MCP servers to ledger data.
  • Untrusted documents. Invoices and vendor statements can contain text that reads like instructions. Only the Managed Agents version of Month-End Closer opens them in a reader with no connector or write tools. The plugin and the single skills do not, so tell the agent to treat attachments as data, keep the GL connector read-only, and review any JE whose support came from an attachment.
  • US defaults. Journal Entry Preparation is written for US GAAP (ASC 606 revenue) and US payroll taxes (FICA, FUTA, 401(k)), financial-statements refers to GAAP presentation, and SOX Compliance Testing is built around SOX. The other skills do not name a framework. IFRS reporters and non-US entities must supply their own policies and check every treatment.
  • Example numbers are examples. Thresholds and approval limits in the skills are illustrations; replace them with your materiality and your authorization matrix.
