GEMBA
CLIMicrosoft Translator's translation quality tool: GPT scores each sentence using MQM error categories or a direct score; --list_mqm_errors shows error types and severity. Needs line-aligned source and target files, Python and an OpenAI or Azure OpenAI key (paid); a translator should still review.
GEMBA-MQM and GEMBA-DA
Setup
Install the package (Python >= 3.8):
pip install .
For editable installs during development:
pip install -e .
Set up secrets either for Azure API or OpenAI API:
export OPENAI_AZURE_ENDPOINT=
export OPENAI_AZURE_KEY=
or
export OPENAI_API_KEY=
Scoring with GEMBA
It assumes two files with the same number of lines. It prints the score for each line pair:
gemba --source=source.txt --hypothesis=hypothesis.txt --source_lang=English --target_lang=Czech --method="GEMBA-MQM" --model="gpt-4"
# or
python -m gemba --source=source.txt --hypothesis=hypothesis.txt --source_lang=English --target_lang=Czech --method="GEMBA-MQM" --model="gpt-4"
The main recommended methods: GEMBA-MQM and GEMBA-DA with the model gpt-4.
Collecting and evaluating experiments for GEMBA-DA
Get mt-metric-eval and download resources:
git clone https://github.com/google-research/mt-metrics-eval.git
cd mt-metrics-eval
pip install .
alias mtme='python3 -m mt_metrics_eval.mtme'
mtme --download
cd ..
mv ~/.mt-metrics-eval/mt-metrics-eval-v2 mt-metrics-eval-v2
Collect data and run the scorer
python gemba_da.py
export PYTHONPATH=mt-metrics-eval:$PYTHONPATH
python evaluate.py

sacreBLEU
CLIThe standard machine translation scorer: computes BLEU, chrF and TER with significance tests and downloads public test sets such as WMT, to compare engines or prompts. Needs Python 3.9+ and reference translations; automatic metrics are a rough screen, so final copy still needs human review.

COMET
CLIUnbabel's machine-translation quality metric: comet-score rates translations per sentence and overall, XCOMET marks error spans and severity, and CometKiwi works without a reference. Good for spot-checking MT. Needs Python 3.8+; models download from Hugging Face, some need a license; GPU helps.

ChatGPT Subtitle Translator
CLITranslates SRT subtitles or plain text in batches through any OpenAI-compatible API, stripping timestamps and other overhead to save tokens, keeping output line-aligned with the source, and resuming interrupted jobs. Needs Node.js 20+, a source install and an OpenAI API key or local Ollama.

ms-swift
CLIModelScope's official training framework for LLMs and multimodal models: the swift command covers pretraining, fine-tuning, RL, inference, evaluation, quantization and deployment for 600+ text and 400+ multimodal models, with Megatron parallelism and a web UI. Usually needs a GPU.

OpenCompass
CLIOpen-source LLM evaluation platform: one opencompass command picks the model and datasets and runs the evaluation across hundreds of benchmarks. Works with local Hugging Face models and API models, with vLLM and LMDeploy for faster inference.
